Before the Spire Falls
A downloadable game
The world is a fantastical place filled with beauty, wonder, and strangeness. It is a world worth saving.
The people of this world are kind and unique. They are people worth saving.
We are a group of witches who have been called upon to stop the Nothing that is devouring the world. We are also worth saving.
________
Before the Spire Falls is a roleplaying game for 2-4 players. A single session will take 2 or more hours, and will feel like a few chapters of a book. It is diceless and GM-less, and uses the Belonging Outside Belonging system written by Avery Alder. Players make vulnerable moves to gain tokens, which they can spend later to make strong moves.
You play as a group of witches traveling to reclaim your world from the Nothing.
To play you will need:
- A copy of these rules
- A copy of each playbook, setting element, and the map page
- About 5 tokens per player (coins, pebbles, etc.)
- Pens, pencils, markers, etc.

Me: "I want a belonging outside belonging to play a mix of magical girls and cosmic horror, but surely that doesn't exist..."
Turned out, this was EXACTLY what I needed. I think the Lovers will especially resonate with one of my players, we will see how the game goes!
I'll probably update after a few sessions. I can't wait to start.
Fantastic! I hope you’ve enjoyed. :)
My partner and I are playing this in a multi-session game, and it has been absolutely delightful! My partner is new to RPGs, and the rules have been both easy to learn and interesting. I love that the Belonging outside Belonging system encourages players to make hard or unpredictable moves against each other; it's kept our magic system exciting, high-stakes, and emotional. Would definitely play again in a group of 2-6 players, including as a way to introduce folks to BoB or RPGs in general.
Reminds me of: the Earthsea trilogy, Princess Mononoke, Friends at the Table's Seasons of Hieron. Magic and danger, but with a focus on relationships and unforeseen consequences.
An outstanding, evocative experience, filled with adventure, hope, and love. A treat to play with old friends (or to play and make new ones!)
Oh my god this is so beautiful! Gorgeous work and really stunning writing.
Thank you so much! 😊
